Tremont, OH (WOIO) -

A commemoration for the survivors of the Ariel Castro kidnappings will take place Sunday evening where the house once stood in a Cleveland neighborhood.

Sunday, May 6th, makes the 5th anniversary of the day when three young women–Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina Dejesus were freed from their captivity in Castro’s Tremont home.

The kidnappings took place between 2002 and 2004 when the women were taken against their will and held in Castro’s home for years.

They were abused and held hostage until May 6th, 2013 when Berry escaped through an unlocked door, and ran for help.

Castro was arrested hours later and went on to plead guilty to more than 900 criminal counts of rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder.

He was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison.

About a month into his sentence, Castro committed suicide in prison.

Since then, the women have worked hard to put their lives back together and move on from the ordeal.

Michelle Knight later legally changed her name to “Lilly Rose.”
